Tulln, Austria Itinerary
Nestled on the southern coast of the Danube River, the town of Tulln, Austria is filled with many great places to explore nature, Austria’s history and taste some of the best foods that the region has to offer! This Tulln, Austria Itinerary will help you get the most out of your trip this year
During the summer of 2021, we decided to take a camping trip to northern Croatia from our home in central Denmark. Since the travel time to Croatia from Denmark was quite long, we decided to stop somewhere in the middle to explore a different area of Europe.
After some research, we decided to make Tulln an der Donau our home for the first, 5 days of our summer vacation.
Not only was this a new area of Austria for us, it was also one of the flatter parts of the country which would be great for a bike trip. We had heard great things about their local campground, and we were very excited to spend some time along the Danube (or “Donau” in German).

Also, Die Garten Tulln graciously provided my family tickets to experience a great day out in the gardens on one of the days of our trip. However, all thoughts on our experiences during our time in Tulln are my own.
Weather in Tulln, Austria / Wetter Tulln
For us, our trip in Tulln, Austria was in the second half of July. This was a perfect time, in my opinion, since the local schools were still in session, leaving the areas not as crowded. Families in Austria would be taking their vacations in August.
The weather was also quite warm during the day with cool evenings. It was absolutely the most perfect weather. Overall, the temperatures in Tulln, Austria are quite mild throughout the year.
Precipitation wise, the rainfall in Tulln is quite comparable to other places in central Europe during the summer months. On the day we arrived in Tulln, we experienced some rain, but we mostly had clear skies during the rest of our trip.
However, May through October are the wettest months throughout the year, so having raingear on your summer vacation to this area of Austria would be a good idea.
Exploring Niederösterreich and the Danube River Valley
Tulln is located in the region of Austria called Niederösterreich, or “lower Austria”. This is because it is the flatter region of Austria, instead of a mountainous region that much of Austria is known for. The town of Tulln lies along the southern part of the Danube River and offers many exciting events throughout the summer.
We arrived one Sunday night and left on a Friday morning. During our stay in this town, we took a one-day trip to Vienna, but we spent the rest of the time living out the Tulln, Austria itinerary by foot or by bike!
Here is all you need to know about what to do, where to eat and where to stay on your trip to Tulln, Austria!
What to do in Tulln, Austria Itinerary
Walking Tour of Tulln, Austria
For us, the first stop on any trip is to the local tourism office. The one in Tulln is located in the northcentral part of the town. Here, we picked up a Stadt Museum Tulln Virtulleum map.
This map, along with downloading the Virtulleum app from the app store on my phone gave us a unique and fun way of exploring the town. This map and tour are also a way of the town’s museum to connect with visitors outside the museum walls.
In all, we were able to find 30 objects from the town’s history with this tour, and we had a lot of fun doing it! We were able to see Roman ruins, monuments during different points in history, as well as learn more about the town itself.
We particularly loved visiting the different churches. They are so ornate and diverse compared to churches in other countries, so don’t miss out on taking a peek!
Art lovers can check out the Egon Schiele Museum, which also has a fun playground for smaller children.

Hauptplatz and Tulln City Center
During our walking tour of Tulln, we came across the Hauptplatz, or main square, of the town. Normally, you can find a nice market in the town center on Fridays in the summer. This will have everything from handmade items to flowers to fruits and vegetables, etc.
However, we were there on a Monday during a special week. The Büsumer Fischmarkt was a mini food festival of sorts where you could get a variety of fish and seafood items. Tables were set up in the center of it all, and they even had music playing. It was a really nice time.
This is also across the street from the town’s shopping mall and in the center of many shops and cafes. We picked up some lunch meat at the butcher to take back to our camper and also bought a few extra items in the local shops. The town has many beautiful buildings, statues and monuments to check out while you are there, as well.

Die Garten Tulln
One of the highlights of our Tulln, Austria itinerary was visiting Die Garten Tulln. This fantastic, botanical garden is a great place to spend a morning if you are interested in nature, gardens, seeing a great view and playing on an amazing playground.
Open from April to October, Die Garten Tulln has more than 65 ecological show gardens and Niederösterreich’s largest adventure and nature playground. We particularly loved that the playground was mostly in the shade since it started to get very warm during our trip.
The boys loved spending extra time there while I took my time exploring the gardens and appreciating the mixture of art with nature.
It was easy to take a stroll on the paved path and visit The Rose Garden, The Love Garden or the Farmer’s Garden. We climbed up the 30-meter high, treetop walkway (elevator available) and got a spectacular view of the Danube River valley.
Each section was very unique, and they even had a Bavarian Beer Garden, where you could enjoy a beer and snack during your trip. If you were extra hungry at Die Garten Tulln, you could get a nice meal at Die Gärtnerei Restaurant.
The view from a table on the terrace will also allow you to witness the light and music show that takes place every hour. An audio guide for the garden is also available for download.

Donaulände, Tulln’s promenade along the Danube River
Luckily for us, all of the spots we visited in Tulln were near the river, so it made it much easier to travel along the Donaulände, which was a path that stretched from the westernmost point of town to the easternmost point and beyond. Traveling along this path was easy by bike, scooter and by foot, and it offered the best views along the way.
Donaubühne, open-air theater
Near the center of the path where we were closest to the attractions on the town tour, we found the Donaubühne, an open-air stage that supports concerts and shows all throughout the summer. The stage is literally floating on the river, which gives it a very cool vibe. However, the seats for viewers are on the land side of the river and set in stadium-like design.
Behind these seats, you can find a variety of huts and trucks for snacks, drinks, ice cream, etc. It is here that we had one of the best tasting ice creams on our entire trip.
If you venture west of the stage, you will notice that there are a variety of places to sit and relax with great views of the river. Some places even have canopies to block out the midday sun and would be an ideal spot for reading a book or chatting with a friend.
Continuing along the path, you will reach the “Tullner Rathaus” or townhall of Tulln. Here is located a magnificent Monument of the Nibelungs or the Nibelung fountain. Read more about the fountain and monument HERE! This is also a great place to enter the town since it is very close to the tourist information center.
Aubad Recreational Park in Tulln, Austria
The most popular spot on our Tulln, Austria itinerary would have to be the Aubad Recreational Park. Not only did the boys have a great time swimming in the water, but my oldest son really loved the two slides. It was so popular with my family that we visited it quite a few times during our short stay.
Perk of Staying at Donau Camping Tulln
The Aubad was also in a perfect location to us since our campground was literally next door to it. We only had a couple of minutes to walk from the door to our camper to the entrance to the park. Not only that, but we were also given free entrance to the park because we were staying at the campground. Very nice!!

Activities at the Aubad Recreational Park
If you want to take a break from being in the water, you could also do many other activities. They had paddle boats to rent, sand volleyball courts, as well as places to play basketball and soccer. For the little ones, they had a fun ship playground, as well as a sandy beach with a water table of sorts.
There was a restaurant in the park where you could order a variety of foods, snacks, drinks, and ice cream! However, you could easily bring in a cooler with your own food if you wanted to have a picnic!
Playgrounds and other Fun Areas in Tulln, Austria
No Tulln, Austria itinerary would be complete without mentioning some of the “fun” places for kids that are sprinkled all along the promenade and Danube River. As we walked from the very eastern part of town to the town center, we came across a wide variety of places that sparked my kids’ interests!!
Shaded Playground
If you walk west from the Aubad to the town center, you will walk past a skateboard park, an indoor pool, a trampoline/mini golf place and a nice, shaded playground. In fact, all of these places are next to each other and easy to see from the walking/biking path.
We love finding places like these for the kids to blow off some steam. We know that we expect them to do a lot of walking on our trips, so it is great to have a reason to stop and take a break! Though the trampolines, mini golf and indoor pool cost money, the skateboard park and playground were free.
Larger Playground Near the Town Center
Also, there is another, larger playground just past the Nibelung fountain. Again, this playground is overlooking the Danube River, and since its location is at the part of the promenade where there are many benches, it could be a really nice spot for a relaxing picnic!
Day Trips from Tulln, Austria
If you feel the need to see a bit more of the area when you are in Tulln, I have some great suggestions for you!
Biking Trip in the Niederösterreich Region / Lower Austria
Because the area of Niederösterreich is quite flat and filled with vineyards, we thought it would be a great area to experience by bike. We hadn’t brought out bikes with us, but we did remember to bring our bike helmets.
Read more about the path we took and what we saw on our Lower Austria Bike Trip!
Since our campground rented bikes for the day, we took advantage of this service. With one of the bike maps that we got from the camping reception office, we set out to see some smaller castles and churches and enjoy a beautiful day in nature.
This was the first, long trip we had ever taken with our boys on bikes. They were used to biking to school, but not on a full-day trip. This would be interesting to say the least.
My husband was overzealous and decided to map out a very LONG trip, which we later had to alter after a couple of complaints and too many stops for snacks and drinks. ? Life with kids is always interesting. Read all about our Biking Trip in Lower Austria HERE!
Day Trip To Vienna
If you choose to stay in Tulln, Austria, you are only 45 minutes away from the capital city of Vienna. This is a great place to visit castles and see many other amazing buildings that have had a place in Austrian history. The Vienna Zoo is also a great option for families, which is very close to the Schönbrunn Palace, a fantastic place for a walk, picnic or photo opportunity!
If you don’t have a car, you can easily access Vienna by train and use public transportation while you are within the city. This makes a side trip to Vienna for a day or two a great addition to any Tulln, Austria itinerary!
Klosterneuburg Abbey and Wine Shop
For the wine enthusiasts, Niederösterreich is a great region to find excellent wines. In fact, the town of Klosterneuburg is the home of the Klosterneuburg Abbey, Austria’s oldest wine estate. You can shop in the wine shop or even take a guide tour of the wine cellar.
Next to the wineshop is the impressive Klosterneuburg Abbey that has acted as a religious and culture center in Lower Austria since the early 12th century. Both the Abbey and the wineshop are well worth a visit!
My Personal Recommendations
Where to Eat in Tulln, Austria
When it comes to great places to eat in Tulln, Austria, I have two places that my family really enjoyed.
Sea You in Tulln
We were so excited to find such a healthy place to get breakfast during our stay in Tulln, Austria. I am a vegetarian, and I often find that when we travel, my options are very limited. This was not the case at Sea You in Tulln. We found enough to eat with a fantastic breakfast in an nice environment. We loved eating outside!!
I would highly recommend the Smoothie Bowl. It was a great mixture of fruit, smoothie, granola and chia seeds. Adding a nice green tea is the best. My children really enjoyed the pancakes with fruit, and my husband had a kiwi and avocado bagel. Since he is a big meat eater, he had to add a side of ham, but he really felt full with this meal. 🙂
Who says that eating out has to always be a greasy and unhealthy experience? Not this gal! 🙂

Restaurant Taverne2 at Donaupark Camping
When we arrived to Tulln and our campground, it was suppertime. We normally would just have something to eat in our camper caravan, but since it was raining pretty heavily, we decided to see what the restaurant at the campground had to offer. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a variety of local dishes with some great brews on tap. Learn more about our meal and the campground HERE!

Overall Thoughts on Tulln, Austria
Tulln, Austria was the perfect place for us to stop on our camping trip to Croatia. The location was picturesque being set along the flatlands of the Danube River. The town was small but had lots of different attractions to keep us entertained.
We also thought it was very clean and very family friendly. Tulln is an easy city to get around. With the easy walking path, we easily made it around town on foot and found the shops and restaurants to be of good quality. Being so close to Vienna was also a plus, since a day trip to Austria’s capital city.
