Situated on the eastern coast of the Roskilde Fjord, Roskilde Camping is just a short drive away from the center of Roskilde and to many other surrounding treasures. During Easter weekend one year, my family and I decided to stay at Roskilde Camping. We wanted to be close to Copenhagen to visit family for Easter Sunday, but we wanted to experience a new place with lots of history and easy access to great natural places. Roskilde, Denmark was the perfect place for spring camping trip.

Disclaimer: I would like to thank Roskilde Camping for giving my family a gifted stay for the Easter weekend at their campground. Though we had a fantastic time, all thoughts and opinions in this post are my own. Check-in at Roskilde Camping

We arrived on Thursday of Easter week and stopped in the registration building for check-in. We were given two access cards that were used for the gate to the campground and also to the machines that turned on the showers in the bathhouse. The staff members were very friendly and welcoming, and the office also had many pamphlets of nearby attractions to explore.

We found our pitch that was in a perfect spot. We were closest to the facilities, near the playground and had a great view of the Roskilde Fjord. Actually, it was almost impossible not to have a good view with the way that campground was designed. Set on the side of a hill, the entire campground gave great views to the water below and the town of Roskilde that lay across the fjord. We quickly began to set up the tent to our camper as the boys went to play.

Playgrounds at Roskilde Camping

When planning any camping trip with kids, it is always a good idea to see if the campground has a playground. We were in luck since Roskilde Camping had many play area.

Check out the amazing playground at Gustavsvik Camping in Örebro, Sweden!

Hopping Pillow

Near the entrance to the campground was the hopping pillow. This was a terrific size, since it was the main attraction for kids at the playground. My kids could spend their entire time at a campground on a hopping pillow, so we were very happy to be parked so close to it and that it was large enough that many children could play on it at a time.

Viking Ship Playground

Also, very nearby our pitch as well as close to the water was the Viking ship playground. Since Roskilde is well-known for having a Viking Ship Museum with many great ships, it was a lot of fun to see that Roskilde Camping had their own version of Viking ships. There were two ships that you could climb with many other areas for balancing, climbing sliding and playing.

Larger Playground

Roskilde Camping also had another playground that was located more at the top of the hill. This reminded me of what you would find at a normal playground.

There was a climbing tower, various types of jungle gyms, animals on springs, playhouses and one of the largest sandboxes I have ever seen! This would be a fantastic playground for younger children, since there were many options for things that were closer to the ground and just the right size for smaller campers.

Swings by the Sea

On our first night at the campground, we went for a walk to watch the sun set on the water of the Roskilde Fjord. It was in the area where some campers were very close to the water that we found two swings on the edge of the coast.

What about other parts of Denmark? Check out Hjarbæk Fjord Camping on Denmark’s peninsula!

My boys said that it was the perfect place to watch the water, and I have to agree!

Soccer Field and Open Space

There is also a soccer field by the water that is large enough for a full game of soccer with other activities on the side. My boys had tennis rackets from home, and they hit the ball back in forth in the area down by the water. It was nice to have so much open space.

Bathhouse / Toilets / Children’s Bathroom at Roskilde Camping

‘One thing that is great about Danish campgrounds is how clean the bathrooms are. When visiting the bath and toilet building, you will need to use the access card to get into the building. Once inside, you’ll see that the building is separated into 4 sections.

Shower Rooms

One is for the showers. As a mother of two growing boys, I appreciated that all the showers were large enough for families to use. This helped us share the access card which was used to turn on the water in the shower. The shower rooms were also equipped with a sink and toilet, which made getting ready in the mornings easier.

Toilets and Sinks

There were also stalls on the other side of the building for toilets and sinks. There weren’t take many, but since the shower rooms had toilets, there seemed to me no waiting when we went in there.

Across form the toilet rooms were rooms just with sinks. This made it easy to go in to brush your teeth without having to take up a shower or toilet room.

Take the train from Roskilde to Copenhagen to spend the day at the world’s second oldest amusement park, Tivoli Gardens!

Children’s Bathroom

My personal favorite area in this building was the children’s bathroom. Instead of a regular door separating this room from the rest of the building, there were swings saloon doors with the characters of Asterix on them. When I grew up in the USA, I didn’t know what Asterix was, but from what my Danish husband has told me, they are a well-loved cartoon in Denmark.

Not only were the doors to the room painted with the Asterix characters, but so were the doors to the toilet stalls and the walls to the showers. Children’s bathrooms are always so cute since the toilets are closer to the ground and the showers are raised on a platform, since it makes showing children easier for parents.

This area also had a table for changing diapers which I am sure many parents of babies would appreciate.

Communal Kitchen at Roskilde Camping

Next to the bath and toilet building is the kitchen. This is where you are more likely to do your dishes, but it just isn’t a thing to do your dishes in your own camper in Denmark. Why would you?

I really liked this kitchen! Not only did it have great views of the fjord, but it also had plenty of sinks, stove tops and ovens.

On our last night there, we actually cooked all of our food in the kitchen and even ate at one of the tables. The lighting and view of the water gave us more of a restaurant feeling while we ate. Also, there was a TV on the wall. Our boys watched a movie as they enjoyed their food, and my husband and I had somewhat of a date as we sipped our local Herslev beers while eating out supper. It was a great time.

Toys in the Kitchen and Picnic Tables

The kitchen also had toys for smaller children who might need entertained while the parents are doing dishes, and you also have the option of renting a freezer or refrigerator, which would be a nice option for those staying in a tent!

In between the bath and toilet building and the kitchens were picnic tables that had terrific views of the fjord and the town of Roskilde. Had it been warmer, I could see us eating a few meals there.

Café Mirakulix and Snacks at Roskilde Camping

Because it wouldn’t be a regular camping weekend in Denmark if we didn’t, we made sure to order bread from the café on Saturday night to have ready for Sunday morning. This is one thing I love about Danish campgrounds, and we didn’t want to break tradition.

You could also order sandwiches and other food from the Café Mirakulix if you weren’t interested in making your own lunch or dinner in your camper. The café was just across the path from the coast which had many picnic tables to enjoy your lunch or any other snack.

We only got ice cream from the snack section of the café. Even though it was the first camping weekend of the season with a whopping 42 F/ 5C temperature, we still had to get ice cream on our trip. The snack area not only had soft serve ice cream, but they also had regular ice cream, popsicles and tons of candy options. My boys were in 7th Heaven.

Roskilde Camping’s Vigen Restaurant

Since we were at Roskilde Camping during the latter days of the corona virus, the nearby restaurant called Vigen wasn’t open. From what we could see from spying in the window and checking out the menu, Roskilde Camping’s Vigen restaurant had high-class meals in smaller portions.

It would have been a great place for a date night, and the location was probably better than any restaurant you would find on the Roskilde Fjord. You were so close to the water that it would have been just magical to sit outside for a meal and a nice drink. We will have to remember that for the next time we are in that area post corona!

Roskilde Camping (Hytter) Cabins

Cabins

Even though we stayed at Roskilde Camping in our own caravan, we couldn’t help but notice the cabins (hytter) that they had there.

In total, the campground had 18 cabins on the hillside with great views of the fjord. 6 cabins were more secluded from the others in the campground, while the other 12 cabins were in the middle of the caravan areas near bath buildings and playgrounds.

Here are the 4 different types of cabins that you can choose from when staying at Roskilde Camping:

a) The smallest of the cabin options is for up to 2 people and includes a toilet and shower. It is one room with a kitchen.

b) One cabin is for up to 4 people with toilet and shower. It also has two separate bedrooms and a kitchen.

c) This cabin is for up to 4 people without a toilet and show and consists of one room in total with a kitchenette.

d) The last of the four options is a cabin that fits up to 5 people without a toilet or shower. This has two separate bedrooms and a kitchenette. All cabins have a great view of the Roskilde Fjord, and some are also dog-friendly!

Apartment

We also noticed one apartment that was just next to the kitchen. This was big enough for a couple and even had one parking space outside the apartment. With your own private toilet and shower, this small apartment had the best views of the fjord for those looking for a romantic getaway.

Minicamp

If you are looking to tag along with some friends who have reserved a cabin at Roskilde Camping, you can have the option of staying in a Minicamp. This is one of the cutest little campers I have ever seen.

They have room in the back/ under the bed for your bag and the space inside the camper trailer is just enough for a bed. I would also think that this could be a great option for those on a biking or backpacking trip who pack light and just need a place to rest their heads. Very interesting idea!

Rentals at Roskilde Camping

For those needing some extras on your visit to Roskilde, Roskilde Camping also has things you can rent.

Bikes

First are bikes. Since the campground is so close to the town of Roskilde, it would be an easy biking trip if you bring your bike. If not, you can easily rent a bike from the registration building. They even have ones with baskets on the front for those needing to cart around little ones.

Cars

They also have cars to rent. Yep! You read that right. You have the option of renting a car from Roskilde Camping, which makes going into the town to grocery shop much easier for hikers and bikers if they have a car to cart their wares.

Other areas at Roskilde Camping

It wouldn’t be right to ignore a few other things about Roskilde Camping, so here you go!

Massage Area

First, it offered massages. I would have loved to partake in that feature. However, since there were restrictions in place due to the corona virus, messages weren’t an option at that time. I would recommend looking into it, though. You can find information posted in the bath and toilet house as well at the reception desk.

Dog Wash

If you are traveling with your dog and need to give him/her a bath during your stay, you would be happy to know that they have a dog washroom. This was located on the back side of the bath and toilet building. It was locked when we were there, so you may want to inquire with the staff in the reception about its use.

Bathing Pier

As I mentioned before, it was a very cold, April weekend when we visited. Because of this, we didn’t make use of the swimming in the fjord. However, we did see some people jumping off of the pier into the cold waters.

In Denmark, it is very common to bathe in the natural waters all year round. I am sure that this pier is very popular during the summer months, so don’t forget to bring your swimwear and towels to enjoy the waters of the Roskilde Fjord.

Laundry

Last but not least is the laundry room. It is always so nice when campground have a laundry room. This makes staying at a place much easier if you don’t have to worry about finding a place to wash clothes. Inside the laundry room at the Roskilde Camping, they also had toys which was a thoughtful addition to help out those parents who needed to bring children with them while they did the laundry.

WiFi

In certain areas of the campground, you can find free Wifi. One in particular is in the kitchen building. With plenty of tables and places to plug in your computer, this is a great place to use the Wifi.

Overall Thoughts of Roskilde Camping in Roskilde, Denmark

If you are looking for a great campground (campingplads), Roskilde Camping is a wonderful choice. Roskilde Camping is great for those looking for a place near the sea that offers many different options for activities.

I would recommend staying at Roskilde for couples who want a close accommodation to Roskilde without the noise of a town. Also, since the campground was only 30 minutes form Copenhagen, Roskilde Camping would make a great day trip from Copenhagen.

We loved the views of the Roskilde Fjord, and since there were so many benches spread out around the campground, we had multiple reasons to relax and enjoy the views. There is something for the whole family at Roskilde Camping!!
