De Schatberg: Family Campground and Vacation Village in the Netherlands
Are you looking for family-friendly campgrounds in the Netherlands for your next trip? For us, we were traveling with two children, ages 9 and 12. We wanted them to be entertained during our Easter camping trip, and the activities in Sevenum, Netherlands proved to be perfect for their ages. That led us to finding De Schatberg Campground and Vacation Village, which had so much to offer our family.
Since it was April, the weather in Sevenum, Netherlands didn’t allow for outdoor swimming, so we looked for a place with an indoor pool. We also wanted to relax during this trip, so we wanted to be in a location where we could walk to find extra, fun activities. That is exactly what we found during our search for a campground in the Limburg section of the Netherlands. Let me tell you all about what you can find at De Schatberg Campground and Vacation Village in Sevenum, Netherlands.
Check in at the Reception at De Schatberg
Check in at De Schatberg Camping was easy. The ladies at the reception spoke a few different languages and had all of our papers ready for us. We were given a map, a card to open the gate, and passes to the indoor swimming pool. Getting to our campsite was quite easy from the main entrance to De Schatberg by following the map.
Map of De Schatberg
The map of De Schatberg was quite large. It seemed that we were going to be so far away from everything. However, that wasn’t the case. Though we were located in the middle of the campground, we seemed to be in a short walking distance to other areas of the campground. There were also many playgrounds and areas to explore, which made it a very interesting place to stay.
Campground at De Schatberg
The campground part of De Schatberg had over 450 spots for campers and/or tents. There were a few rows that were for permanent spots, and many of the people who had permanent spots really made their campsites look like a home-away-from-home with yards gates and manicured gardens.
We stayed in the Yellow section called “comfort place L”. Located in the center of the map, this section was very close to a bathhouse and a couple of smaller playgrounds. One seemed perfect for toddlers and smaller children, and the other one that was closer to us was quite perfect for my boys: ages 9 and 12.
The spots were quite large and flat, so it took us no time at all to set up our tent when we arrived. We were really pleased with our place!
Camping with Dogs in the Netherlands
For those traveling with dogs, there were special campsites for people with dogs. There was a special section of the campground that was designated as the “dog toilet” with fenced in “poo” areas. They even had a dog parkour course and a dog bathing area. It really proved that De Schatberg was a great, dog-friendly campground in the Netherlands.
Camping with Small Children in the Netherlands
They also had a special area of the part for those who were traveling with smaller children. Your camping fee was combined with your entrance to the Mattel Play experience in the FEC Sevenum building that was located just outside of the campground.
This camping section also had 5, smaller playgrounds in its area, which was more than any other area of the campground. De Schatberg really had different families in mind to make camping with toddlers and small children in the Netherlands quite easy.
Vacation Cabins for Vacansoleil, Roan and Eurocamp
We were also very close to where some of the cabins were located. However, these were not a part of the 250+ cabins that were spread out on the map near the lake on the western part of the campground.
These weren’t even marked on the map. In fact, they were actually a part of Vacansoleil, Roan, and Europcamp companies that had cabins at the De Schatberg campground. We were actually closest to the Vacansoleil cabins, which to mean looked more like safari tents. They had other cabins around the grounds as well.
When you are looking to rent one of these cabins for your trip, you will want to visit their respective websites for more information. Just be sure to look for De Schatberg on their web pages.
Landal Domein Summer Houses and Cabins at DeSchatberg
The cabins that were on the map on the western part of the campground were all part of the Landal Domein De Schatberg. They were more modern with much more space and less of a “camping” feel. The appearance was more like summer houses, and they had options from 4-person cabins to 32-person group hotels.

The possibilities were massive. There were even some cabins that were on an island in the lake. Very cool idea if you ask me!
Outdoor Activities at De Schatberg
A big reason why we decided to stay at De Schatberg for Easter was because it is one of the best, family-friendly campgrounds in the Netherlands. This was visible everywhere we walked within the grounds. They had an amazing list of outdoor activities for children of all ages, as well as adults.
Many Playgrounds at De Schatberg
No matter where we were at this impressive, 5-star campground in the Netherlands, we were always close to a playground. In fact, there were 15 different playgrounds throughout the campground. Some of them were small with one climbing tower or rocking horse, but others had many pieces of equipment.
All were very different from each other, so it was fun going around the campground to try them out!
Main Playground at the Entrance to the Campground
The first part of De Schatberg Campground that we noticed was the giant playground. Here, you could find a large tower with a long, red slide. My boys wasted no time at all getting to the top and sliding down the bottom. They also had other places to climb with bridges and ladders.
Macho Garden
For bigger kids, there was a fun area just next to the main playground. This seemed to be an area that was for teenagers to adults, since all of the equipment was either hard to reach or operate unless you were a bigger person. My boys were able to try it with the help of their dad, and they had a lot of fun swinging around by their arms.
Sport and Speelpark (Play Park) at De Schatberg
We were completely blown away when we saw the Sport and Speelpark.
During the first night we were at the campground, we decided to take a walk and check out the main playground that we saw at check in. On our way there, we came across the large sports park that will filled with kids.
They had a couple of different courts for soccer (football), a court for basketball, table tennis tables, hopping pillows, a bocce ball court, a parkour course, and a playground. We spent many of our days at this playground.
Klim Kong Climbing Ship
Next to the entrance to De Schatberg is the Klim Kong Ropes Course. From the road, it looks like a giant, pirate ship that you can climb. This would have definitely been on our to-do list had the course been open during our visit. We were a bit bummed to hear that it was closed, but we were very happy to get to try the mini-golf course instead.
Pirate Adventure Golf Course
Next to the Klim Kong ropes course was the 18-hole, mini-golf course called Pirate Adventure. My boys have always loved playing mini golf, but they are now starting to get good at it. In fact, what started out as a fun, competition between me and my husband turned into a family competition. We still tried to make the game light and carefree, though we all wanted to win!
The course was a lot of fun and very well maintained. Though we had the option of stopping after 9 holes, we were excited to continue to the end of the 18th hole. We had a great view of one of the ponds at De Schatberg, and it was a perfect day for golf. At the end my husband and I tied for first place, which never happened before! They boys were also only a few strokes behind, which made the game very exciting!
Adventure Paradise Paintball
One area that looked really cool was the Adventure Paradise Paintball course. They had some buildings that made it look like you were really going on a mission somewhere in South America. Because my youngest was 9, we decided not to try it.
His little body may have been up for the challenge, but I just didn’t want to risk it. To me, this would be a better activity to do with our kids when they become teenagers. That is something to remember for the next time.
Seven-Twenty Cable Park
Another great activity for older kids is the Seven-Twenty Cable Park. This is all about water sports, which is something my family doesn’t know anything about. It didn’t seem to be open during our time there, anyway, but it could have been fun to watch other waterski or wakeboard on the waters of De Schatberg.
Fishing
While we were at De Schatberg, we also noticed a couple of people fishing on the banks of the larger pond. We have always talked about taking the boys fishing during a camping trip. We even have our own fishing poles, but for some reason, they weren’t in the camper. If you are interested in fishing, don’t forget to pack your gear when visiting De Schatberg. You can also purchase a fishing license directly at the campground.
Bike Rental
We also noticed in the same place where you could get your fishing license, you could rent a bike. They had many different types of bikes to choose from. I think that if we would have stayed at De Schatberg for our summer holiday, it would have been a good idea to rent a bike to see the area.
We had done that on our summer trip to Austria, and biking in lower Austria was a great experience. I think that it would be just as much fun in this part of the Netherlands.
Read all about our bike trip in lower Austria HERE!
Entertainment and Sport Programs
Since we were visiting De Schatberg for the Easter weekend, we were too early for many of the entertainment and sport programs that they offer at the campground. I know that I would have loved to be a part of the D-JOY program to do a different sport activity with other adults.
My 12-year old could have had some fun with the TED program, which was just for tweens and teens to get to know other peers and do fun activities together. During the summer months, there are Tommie and Lila Club activities, which could be fun for children under the age of 12.
Easter Sunday Activities at De Schatberg
We were lucky enough that there were a few Tommie and Lila Club activities on Easter Sunday. Both my boys were involved with the Easter egg hunt, where they had to go around the Sport and Speelpark to find and answer questions that were on different Easter eggs. Though the questions were in Dutch, we were glad to have Google Translate to help!
During Easter Sunday, they also had a table set up next to the entrance to the indoor pool where kids could get their faces painted and color a Tommie and Lila page.
Fun in the Water at De Schatberg
Though we had great weather at De Schatberg during our Easter camping trip, we did go indoors during our time there for one big reason: the pool.
Swimming Pools at De Schatberg
De Schatberg had a nice, indoor pool that we visited during our stay at the campground. You needed to swipe the “swim card” that we got at check in and then go to the changing room. The changing rooms here were not like what we would find in Denmark.
They were mostly places to change into your suit. Once you had it on and your things locked in your locker, you stepped into a coed space to rinse in a shared shower.
Boy, was I glad that I didn’t go out of the changing room naked like you would expect to do in Denmark. I would have shocked quite a few people! LOL
One thing to keep in mind when going to this pool is that you need to take a coin with you to operate the lockers. When we were there, it was 50Cents (Euro).
Indoor Pool
The indoor pool was one large pool with a free-swim section and one part with a separate wall for a current. You could sit on an innertube and have the current push you through the path. We thought it was fun to float without the tube. The pool was a moderate temperature, which was good enough for us. They also had a large slide that didn’t empty into the pool. I liked that it was separate from the pool, because it made the slide safer for younger kids.
There was also a shallow pool for the smaller children and a warm tub with bubbles. I can’t consider this tub a “hot tub”, since the water wasn’t the normal temperature of a hot tub. Still, it was warm and relaxing, and we enjoyed the bubbles.
Outdoor Pool
Though we were there before the outdoor pool opened, we did get to see it from the window and from our walks around the campground. This was a large pool, like what we found inside, but it seemed that it might have been deeper. There was also a slide much like the indoor pool but longer.
Separate from this outdoor pool was another water area. I wouldn’t call this a pool, since it didn’t have deep waters. Instead, it resembled more of a playground in the water. We have been to these types of water attractions before, and they are always fun. It was a shame that we were too early in the season to try them, since I know my boys would have had a lot of fun!
The Swimming Pond at De Schatberg
There was also a pond that was next to the reception building that had a sandy beach. This would be a great place to get cooled off on a warm summer day. But like I said, it was April, so we didn’t see anyone swimming during our trip. They also had a sand volleyball course on one part of this beach.
Bathroom, Kitchen and Laundry
Near our campsite, there was a bathroom / kitchen / laundry building. They had separate sections for the toilets and shower / sink room. On the woman’s side of the toilets, there was a child’s toilet that was decorated with a bunny on the door. It was cute to find a small toilet inside.
In both the men’s and women’s shower rooms, there was one stall each where they had a washing tub and changing station for babies. Since we were near a large section of cabins that had their own bathrooms, the shower and toilets were never full when I went in.
Laundry Machines
In between the shower doors for men and women was a washing machine and dryer. These were coin operated. We saw these machines in other buildings as well, which could make it easy for those staying at De Schatberg for longer periods of time.
I also refer to this building at the “kitchen” since the sinks in the middle of the building that were used for washing your hands after the toilet were the same sinks where people washed their dishes. We had looked in other buildings and only saw sinks for the kitchen part. There were no ovens, microwaves or stove tops. It is important to know that campers should bring their own grill or use their own camper kitchens.
Where to eat at De Schatberg Camping
If you are hungry and don’t want to cook your own food, De Schatberg has a couple of different food options for you.
Snack Point
One place that we visited quite often on our stay at De Schatberg was the ice cream counter at the Snack Point. Not only did they have some delicious options, but the price was quite reasonable compared to what we pay in Denmark.
Between the four of us, I think we tried all of their flavors by the time we left! We like to enjoy our ice cream by the pond or near the playground.
At the Snack Point, you could also get fast-food-style meals, like burgers and pizzas. This was all for takeaway, so you could enjoy your food on a picnic at the playground or back at your camper.
Eetcafe Trattoria
If you are looking for a meal anytime of day, you can find a great selection at the Eetcafe Trattoria at De Schatberg campground. You can get a drink from the bar, coffee and dessert or a variety of foods like: burgers, salads, pasta, sandwiches, pizza, etc.
Situated in the main building, you are close to the reception, grocery store and snack point. However, with the modern decor and lovely plants, the atmosphere is very laidback and comfortable with an elegant and modern feel. There is even a pool table and ball bit to entertain the kids.
Serre Restaurant
If you are looking for a great place to have supper, check out the Serre Restaurant for a fine dining experience at the campground. Here, you can choose from a variety of 3 or 4-course meals. They also have many seasonal dishes with ingredients found in the local area. Give your taste buds a Dutch experience in this restaurant. There is also a great Tommie and Lila Playroom inside for the kids.
Lounge Terrace
With great views of the tranquil pond and fun playground, the Lounge Terrace at De Schatberg is a great place to have lunch. Parents can also relax with a nice beverage on the comfy patio couches as the kids play on the playground at any time of day!
Easter Brunch at DeSchatburg Camping
A major highlight of our time at DeSchatburg was the brunch we had on Easter Sunday. Though we enjoy camping on this long weekend, I still want to keep the holiday special. That is why I was so happy when I heard about the special Easter brunch that they were doing especially for Easter. Though space was limited, we were lucky to get a reservation.
They had a wide variety of warm dishes, delicious soups, meats, cheeses, eggs, and some Dutch specialties. My boys loved a buffet, and they were in heaven with all of the different, dessert breads that they had. It was very eloquently decorated with wine and juice to start. In the words of my children, it was very “fancy”.
The Spar Grocery Store at De Schatberg
Since we ate many of our meals at our camper, we needed to get a few things from time to time. We were glad that they had such a nice grocery store at the campground. We found a good variety of foods to put on the grill as well as fresh fruits and vegetables. Their drink section also had a good selection of beers from the region, which is always something we like to buy when we are camping.
I think the boys liked the slide the most. Yes, you heard me! They had a slide that took children to the bottom level of the store. Here, you could also find many extra items. Things like toys, purses, décor, etc. We decided to get a couple, new badminton rackets and birdies to play at the campsite.
What to do in Sevenum, Netherlands and Nearby
If you are looking for the top sites to see in the Netherlands, don’t overlook Sevenum. Though it is not in the same area as many of Holland’s larger cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or the Hague, it is very easy to access via the highway and close to the German border. Here are a few, nearby places that you can access off the campground.
FEC Sevenum This is an amazing entertainment building that has great activities for families with toddlers to teens. The restaurant is also a great place to eat, since it combines 12 different restaurants in one.
Toverland Amusement Park If you are looking for a nearby amusement park, you will be happy to know that Toverland is located in the same town as De Schatberg.
We made a short trip to the town of Sevenum, Netherlands to get a feel for Dutch culture. The quaint downtown area had a lovely church. We also enjoyed a nice meal at De Sevewaeg.
If you are looking to add a bit of shopping to your camping trip in eastern Netherlands, check out the Designer Outlet Mall at Roermond. You can find a wide variety of stores selling goods at discounted prices.
Overall Thoughts of De Schatberg Campground
We had an amazing time at De Schatberg. In our opinion, it is one of the best campgrounds in Netherlands (Holland). The lot where we stayed in the yellow “L” section was quite large and flat. It was very easy to set up our tent to our camper with no problems. The boys also had room to play badminton when they were waiting for supper.
We loved that there were multiple playgrounds throughout the campground, as well as multiple bathroom buildings. The water source was also next to our camper and shared with three other spots, which made it easy to make our morning coffee and tea. Though the campground was quite full during out stay, it never felt loud or crowded.
Our boys loved going to the Sport and Speelpark. It was great that they could go there and find something fun to do no matter the time of day. We also enjoyed many activities as a family, like Soccer 44 or table tennis, which was nice. The entire campground felt very cozy and safe. We felt very comfortable there.
With all of the options both on and nearby the campground for families, there would be no reason to search for hotels in Sevenum. De Schatberg had all we needed for your accommodation and much more to entertain our family. I would recommend a stay at De Schatberg for any family traveling in the Netherlands!
