Travelling for Easter break can always be a challenge since it is hard to predict the weather. However, we were very surprised by the good weather in Örebro during our trip. Though we had light coats on during our stay there, we were happy that one of the best indoor water parks in all of Sweden was located in Örebro. That made it a perfect location for us to stay for a few days, since that made it a safe place to relax knowing that some great, indoor fun was right at our doorstep.
After spending some time in Örebro, however, we realized that it was one of the best places we could have stayed during our trip. Not only did we feel extremely safe and comfortable in the town, we also had some great experiences as a family on our day out exploring.
Here are my recommendations for some fun things to do on your next trip to Örebro, Sweden!
1) Visit Örebro Castle in Örebro, Sweden
The very charming Örebro Castle in Örebro, Sweden dates back to the medieval times. In fact, it was built in the 1300s! Almost on its own little island, the Örebro Castle has only one main entrance and exit since it is nearly completely surrounded by water. You really get the feeling of walking back in time when you walk through the entrance of this amazing castle.
There is a lot of Swedish history associated with this castle, and it is one of the best preserved castles of its kind in Sweden. Those interested in castles will find it quite interesting if you book a guided tour.
We loved it for allowing us to use our imaginations. With fun dress-up clothes and areas created with kids’ in mind, the Örebro Castle really did a good job of entertaining our kids. Check out the Children’s Castle if you are going to the part of Sweden with kids for a fun experience.

2) Experience History at Wadköping Open Air Museum
The best place in Örebro that really had something for everyone was the Wadköping Open-Air Museum. We went hoping to find a truly unique experience for families in Sweden, and we got it! My boys were 9 and 6 at the time, and we found enough to entertain them as well as catch the interest of us parents.
Visit Kungsstugan, Örebro’s Oldest Building
The area of Wadköping dates back to the medieval times, when it was a town settlement. Though most of the buildings you find there are not that old, it does contain a truly unique place in Sweden. Originating from the 15 hundreds, the mayor’s house is a wooden home with farm. This “Kungsstugan” is actually Örebro’s oldest building.
It is said that a duke visited his cottage during the late 1500s. This duke later became King Charles IX of Sweden! Look for the sign above the door which reads, “pax intransibus salus exentibus”, which means “peas to those who enter, prosperity to those who leave”.
Some say that Wadköping is much like Skasen Open-Air Museum in Stockholm. If you are looking for more fun ideas for a side trip to Stockholm, check out my suggestions HERE.
