Checking in at Auning Camping

For us, we decided to visit Auning Campground during their opening weekend at the end of April for a relaxing weekend getaway. It wasn’t too far from our home, and we liked that it was in a quite area. We arrived one, Friday night after work to start a peaceful, family weekend.

The check-in process at Auning Camping was quite easy. There was a small section to park the car and camper outside the gate, but it was a short walk to the main building. We were given a map to the campground, a sheet of information and some information about the area.

Also, we got the entrance card to use at the gate when coming and going. Since there was only one road in and out of the campground, finding our spot was quite easy.

Our Spot at the Campground

To say that we got the best place at the campground would be an understatement. We were in spot number 10, and from inside my camper, I had a great view of the playgrounds and main building. We were in a short walking distance to the bathroom building and kitchen. It is safe to say that there weren’t any bad spots in the campground.

For those wanting a more secluded spot near nature, they had a nice section that was up against a forest. The entire campground was quiet and small, so we would have been happy in any spot!

Cabin and Other Rentals at Auning Camping

If you are looking for a place to stay when you visit the Djurssommerland Amusement Park, Auning Camping has some great cabins, tents and camper caravans to rent.

These small, but quaint cabins are perfect for up to 4 people with a double bed and a loft for the kids. You can find a table that fits four people, a cabin with all the dishes and cooking items you will need as well as a small refrigerator. These cabins are also perfect if you are taking a bike trip in Midtjylland / Østjylland.

Renting a Tent or Caravan at Auning Camping

If you would like to stay in something a bit bigger, you can rent a tent or caravan. The caravan is just what it sounds like. You can experience what it is like for others to camp in Denmark with their own camper without having to buy your own.

Another great option would be to rent a tent. This isn’t a conventional tent with sleeping bags on the floor. Instead, this much like a pop-up camper.

Inside, you will find a table and chair set for four people. There is also a shelving unit with many of the items you would expect to find in a kitchen from plates to pots and pans to a coffee carafe. This shelf also has a built-in sink and stove tops, and next to it is a small refrigerator. With two sleeping areas, you can easily fit four people in this tent.

Playgrounds and more at Auning Camping

We were surprised to find so much for kids to do at Auning Camping. Though the campground is smaller than others, it actually had much for to do than other places its size.

Check out this amazing playground at Hald Sø near Viborg, Denmark!

Playground for Bigger Kids

There was a great climbing tower with slide. Kids could climb up the rock wall or take the ropes to the slide. It was all made of wood and on a sand bed. There was also a swing set and a couple of rocking horses.

Playground for Smaller Children

Next to this playground was another playground that was better suited for smaller children. There was a smaller climbing place with a slide and other areas for imaginative play. They also had a fun little, pirate ship for even smaller children and toddlers.

Table Tennis and Hopping Pillows

Since we love playing table tennis, we were also very happy to see a table at the playground for that! We were very glad that we remembered our paddles and balls!

Across from the playground is also two, nice hopping pillows. My boys sent to those right away when we arrived at Auning Camping. It is always a great place for them to meet other children. They allow had a small merry-go-round and large teeter-totter.

They even had a picnic table inside this area as well as in the area in between the playgrounds. It was a perfect place for parents to sit and watch their kids or for families to have a snack or lunch in the sunshine!

Ball Field at Auning Camping in Djursland

On the opposite end of the campground from the playground is a ball field. Any ball play at the campground is encouraged to be played on this field. It was also nice that we remembered a ball, since the boys really love playing soccer on our camping trips. It was nice that Auning Camping had a soccer (football) field.

Krolf Course

One activity that I had never heard of was Krolf. This was a game where the sports of golf and croquet were combined. We love to play minigolf, and since Auning Camping didn’t have a mini golf course, we were excited to try something new.

Bathrooms at Auning Camping

The bathroom and toilet building was newly remodeled and very clean. They had multiple rooms with toilets, as well as a few rooms with toilets and sinks. There were also a few shower rooms and plenty of sinks that were of adult size and child size.

They even had a couple of rooms that were used for family bathrooms and/or handicap visitors. These bathrooms were also very new and clean. I loved how they had both an adult shower and a child’s shower. There were also a small bathtub and changing table.

Indoor and Outdoor Kitchen at Auning Camping

I love having the option of both an indoor and outdoor kitchen when camping. When the weather is nice in Denmark, you just want to be outside as often as possible. However, Denmark can be a rainy place, so it is is nice to have another option.

Outdoor Kitchen

It was nice that there were not only sinks in the outdoor kitchen, but there were also stop tops an oven and a microwave. Cooking and clean up could be easily done as we watched the boys on the hopping pillows! Having a canopy over the kitchen was also nice for those rainy days.

The indoor kitchen was, of course, bigger than what we found outside. This gave more people the opportunity to use sinks, stovetops and oven at the campground.

A Very Eco-Friendly Campground in Djursland

Though we love to recycle at home, it isn’t always something that we find to be important at campgrounds. We were so glad that the owners of Auning Camping shared our view of sustainability. Outside the main kitchen building and the kitchen area by the cabins, we found many containers for all kinds of garbage: food waste, plastic, paper, etc.

In fact, Auning Camping is a certified GREENSTAY campground that has pledged to do its part to be more sustainable. “Bæredygtig Camping” (Sustainable Camping) is what it is called in Danish and it is a movement that is working to improve the environment.

After all, when people go camping, isn’t it often because they want to be closer to nature? You can be sure that when you have a GreenStay at Auning camping, you are not just getting closer to nature, but you are a part of the sustainable tourism movement!

There were also two charging stations for electric or hybrid cars. There is a charge to use these, but it is another thing guests can do to help the environment.

Bar Hyggelig at Auning Camping in Djursland

On the Saturday night that we were at the campground, they had live music on the patio to the main building. This is also where the Bar Hyggelig was located, which served a variety of alcoholic beverages, soda pop, warm drinks and slush ices. We even were able to buy some snacks while we enjoyed the music.

Campground Shop at Auning Camping

If you need something for your camper, meal or sweet tooth, the store at Auning Camping has a variety of things. In Denmark, children are used to eating candy on Friday nights, but when camping, eating candy might occur more often! Your children will be excited when they see the wall of sweets that they have in the store. It is also a great place to get an ice cream on a warm day.

I appreciated that they had a variety of pantry items, like canned food and spices, since those are often things we forget to buy. They also have a variety of snacks and drinks. We even bought one of their private label bottles of wine! Yum!

If you are in need of something for your camper or tent, they also have a wall with some items that might be helpful. One thing that we always need on our Sunday mornings is bread, so we were happy that we could place our bread order on Saturday and pick up the fresh bread on Sunday morning! Ask in the store if you have questions or want to place your bread order.

Overall Thoughts of Auning Camping

We had a very relaxing time at Auning Camping in Djursland. We loved how quiet it was, though we were on the outskirts of a town. We were also in a short driving distance to restaurants, grocery stores and other places of interest, which made it an ideal place to stay when in the Djursland area of Denmark.

There was also a fantastic forest just behind the campground, which was perfect for hiking and mountain biking. You would definitely want to bring your bikes when visiting this campground, which we plan to do in a few weeks when we return for another visit. Also, the Auning Camping wifi was free and gave a good signal, which can often be important had it been rainy!

Overall, the entire campground was very inviting and friendly, and we had multiple chances to get to know the owners as well as other guests. It was a perfect place for a relaxing, family weekend in eastern Denmark, and we are excited for more weekends back at Auning Camping!
