Mariager Camping and Hytter in Denmark
Sometimes when you want to go on weekend camping trip, you just want to relax. That is why we decided to visit the town of Mariager one September weekend to get away from it all for a peaceful weekend in Denmark. Located on a beautiful inlet of water called the Mariager Fjord, The Mariager Camping and Hytter campground has great views of the water and easy access to the quaint village of Mariager.
If a relaxing weekend is what you are planning, the quiet area of Mariager will deliver. Let me tell you why it is worth a visit in the month of September or any time of year.

Getting There and Checking In
As we arrived in the village of Mariager in the southern part of Northern Denmark or “Nordjylland”, the Mariager Camping and Hytter wasn’t hard to find. Located directly on the Mariager Fjord, this small campground was a perfect location for a relaxing weekend. We were in easy walking distance to the Mariager Salt Center, Mariager Havn (harbor) and the old-fashioned village of Mariager.
When to Visit Mariager Camping and Hytter (Cabins)
Since the campground is open year round, you aren’t limited on when you can visit. However, if you are looking to be outside and having fun in the water, the summer months are the best time for that. For us, we went there in the Fall when the weather was cool and windy.

We weren’t able to enjoy the warm-weather activities, but we were there for the Lysregatta, annual Light Regatta. This is a typical, small-town event with boats and kayaks taking a quick spin the small harbor of Mariager whie covered in lights. The added musical performances and food booths, however, made the event much more fun.
Since we were staying at the campground, we didn’t have to drive to get back home after all the fun. It really added some extra entertainment to our weekend that might not have happened on a normal, fall weekend in Mariager.
Fun for Kids at the Campground
Though it was a very small campground, I was very surprised at how many different items they had on their playground for mid-sized to smaller children.
Playground at Mariager Camping and Hytter
The first stop for our boys at any campground in the playground. The like to scope out all the activities right away to figure out what they want to try first. The playground at Mariager Camping had different items for children of all sizes.

They had a jungle gym, a tower with some cool balancing stands, and two things I have never seen at a campground playground.
One was a ball pit. This must have been more for the little ones because my older son found it somewhat hard to get into. They both gave it a try, though.
The other unique part of the playground was the spinning house. This was very comparable to a hamster wheel, and it was fun trying to keep our balance. I should also mention that they had a hopping pillow. No matter what a playground has to offer, my boys still play the most on the hopping pillow!
Moon Cars
Whenever we stay at a campground with moon cars, the boys just have to ride them. The boys loved this, and it was a great way for them to burn off some energy. We took a walk around the campground while they rode on the moon cars.
Soccer Field
Another popular spot when we are at campgrounds is the soccer field. This was in an area away from the camping lots, so there would be no issues with stray balls coming our way. We always pack a ball when we go camping, just in case.
Campground Train
Perhaps the best way to get a tour of the campground would be from the campground’s train. This train has scheduled times and is free for campers.
Sport Activities at Mariager Camping and Hytter
Since we were at the campground in September, we weren’t able to do many of the other activities that the campground had for the summertime. We learned that you can rent kayaks and SUP boards at the campground.
Have a fantastic day seeing the “world” and playing at Verdenskortet in nearby Klejtrup, Denmark.
There are also fish cleaning areas for those who come to the Mariager Fjord for fishing. The area also had some great swimming beaches nearby. We loved that we were also close to some nice hiking paths that had great views of the fjord.
Shower and Kitchen Building
The facilities at Mariager Camping and Hytter were all located near the main building. Since the campground is rather small, there weren’t that may bathrooms. However, the showers and toilets were very clean and well maintained. Be prepared to take you coins with you when you go to the shower, because there is a charge to use them. Ask when you check in about the price.
Also, there were a few different places for outdoor grills and an outdoor sink. With a few picnic tables next to it, this must be a very cozy spot for a meal in the summertime. The indoor kitchen was also small, but it was a nice place to wash dishes with a great view.
Cabins for rent
If you are planning on visiting the area without a camper caravan or RV, you can see if one of the cabins are available. Mariager Camping and Hytter has a good variety of cabin styles. They range from luxurious to family-style but there are also smaller, two-people cabins as well as mini “bubbles” that overlook the fjord.
Attractions in Mariager
Since the campground is in walking distance to the village and harbor, it is easy to see the sights of Mariager while camping at Mariager Camping and Hytter. Stroll down the cobblestoned streets surrounded by buildings that seemed to be forgotten by time.
Visit the small Mariager Harbor with its many sailboats and impressive crane. Take a train or boat ride on or near the beautiful Mariager Fjord or even visit the family-friendly Salt Center to learn more about the history of salt. You can learn all about these places HERE.
Overview of Mariager Fjord Camping
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised by Mariager Fjord Camping. At a distance, it seemed like a perfect campground for older couples who made camping a way of life. However, with all that we experienced there, we would definitely return to Mariager Fjord Camping for another peaceful weekend.
We loved seeing the town of Mariager and thought that Mariager Fjord Camping was a great location for anyone interested in golfing, fishing or boating experiences. There are so many more options to explore on our next trip. Visiting Mariager, Denmark in September during the Lysregatta was also a bonus.
This event was a very unique and intimate experience for me as a foreigner to Denmark, and I really appreciated how included my family felt. If you are looking for a small campground with a relaxing vibe, I would recommend Mariager Camping and Hytter.
