With lots of activities and an easy to tread path, this is a great place for those with strollers or wheelchairs who want to experience the Black Forest but may not be able to handle hard hikes. We went there as a family with children and had a great time.
Come along with me to the Black Forest in southern Germany, where I will show you 5 reasons to visit the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald.
Vacation in the Black Forest in Germany
One summer, we decided to spend some time camping in southern Germany. We wanted to stop in the Black Forest, since it is well-known for its beauty. Though, we knew that we could easily spend our entire vacation seeing all the sights of the Black Forest, we only had a few days to spend there.

That meant we needed to find something spectacular for this short trip. We wanted a trip to remember, and we wanted to make sure that we chose the best spot to see. After some research, we were hooked on the idea of seeing the Baumwipfelpfad, the winding tower and the fun-filled path that awaited with obstacles along the way.
Bad Wildbad, Germany and the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
As we approached Bad Wildbad, Germany, we didn’t have far to drive before finding the parking lot and path into the forest that led to the Baumwipfelpfad. The drive was already up a rather steep hill, and when we walked towards the path from the parking lot, we continued to go uphill.
“Baumwifpfelpfad Schwarzwald” is German for “treetop walkway in the Black Forest”, so it didn’t seem completely odd for us to be walking upwards. After all, we needed to get to the tree tops.
5 Reasons to Visit the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
The excitement never faltered, so it was easy to see how Baumwipfelpfad became such a hit with our family. There are 5 reasons why! Let me tell you about them!
1) Treetop Path
We were still very much at the bottom of the trees when we reached the entrance to the path and paid our admission. The path was man-made and started to go upwards right away. We were excited to see just how high up we would go!
After walking not more than a minute, it was very hard to believe that we had just been on the ground, because we were going up rather quickly. The boys wanted to run down the path, but they settled for walking just a bit faster than normal. That was until we reached a spot on the path where we could see just how high we were.
2) Beautiful Views
As you can image, the views from the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald were amazing!!! Not only did we see directly below us, but we could also see miles out across the forest. We could even see a neighboring village down below.

Everything looked very small, which also gave us the feeling that we were giants. We loved the musical “Into the Woods”, and this experience made us feel that we were the “giants in the sky”!
3) Fun Obstacles
One big surprise that we had along the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald was that every so often, we would find a fun obstacle. These obstacles were optional, since they were on a small, detoured section of the path. You could choose a plain path or one with an obstacle.
Being so high up triggered my fear of heights only when I felt afraid I’d fall. This wasn’t the case on the Baumwipfelpfad for the most part, because it was very sturdy and secure.
However, some of the obstacles made it feel like you were walking on a tightrope above the forest floor. I have to say that I was scared to try them, but when my children attacked the obstacles with speed and confidence, I knew that I had to try them too.
It could have also been the older lady who was old enough to be my mother passing me to try them that inspired me to stop being such a baby! 🙂 No matter who gets the bragging rights for being my inspiration, I was glad I put on my “big-girl” pants that day and had some fun.
4) The Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald Tower
After completing many fun obstacles, we finally reached the end of the Baumwipfelpfad and the tower. We knew what awaited us at the end of the path, but we weren’t quite prepared for the sight of it. It was really quite spectacular. Now, we needed to walk up and around the path to get to the top of the tower.
Though my husband and boys were really excited to run up to the very top, my fear of heights won over me, and I was frozen at about halfway. All in all, I was okay with it, since I am very used to how I am. I have to admit, though, that it was a bit sad to stand there in my lead shoes unable to move even though families with baby strollers had no problem passing me by.
That’s how it is sometimes!

My boys loved going to the top. They were at the top of even the tallest tree, and they thought it was really “cool” to be up so high. I, on the other hand, was freaked out the entire time, just praying that a strong wind or large bird wouldn’t take my babies from me! Yes, I’m also a bit of a worrier. Double whammy!
When they met me at my modest halfway point, it was time to work our way down the tower. I just wasn’t prepared for how that would happen.
5) The Slide
The tower to the Baumwipfelpfad wasn’t just neat on its own, but it also had a really cool slide in the middle. This slide started at about halfway up the tower and ended at the bottom near the exit. For a cost of 2 Euros, we could sail to the bottom on what looked like a potato sack. My husband and boys were ready to take the slide, but believe me, I was hesitant.
If you know me, you know that I am not about speed. The look of this slide terrified me. I thought that this would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we could all share together. The problem was that I was just not brave enough.
Being a slave to my fears is a real drag sometimes. It stopped me from doing really cool things! I knew I would be kicking myself if I passed on such a neat experience this time, so I sucked it up and said I’d do it.
Not being alone on this journey
Like I said, this was a tube slide, so I couldn’t really see just what it would be like. I had no way of seeing the faces or bodies or travel experience of the others who had gone before me, so I went into it completely blind of what to expect. I used this to my advantage and tried to psych myself up just not to freak out.
Taking the plunge at the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
With a quick prayer, I closed my eyes and went down the slide. At first, I wanted to scream out loud, but after a few seconds, the hysteria went away. Like most things I’m terrified of, it wasn’t that bad.
My knees were a bit shaky when I tried to stand up at the end, but overall, I survived. There were a lot of twists and turns. It was actually kind of cool. I was very proud of myself. The boys also loved the slide and would gladly go back another day to try it again.
For many reasons, being a mom has made me a better person, and though going down a slide might not be anything major for many, it is for me. I know that my boys will not forget their day at the Baumwipfelpfad in the Black Forest any more than I will. If we pass this way again, we are definitely spending more time in the Black Forest!
Souvenir of the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald
Just before we left the Baumwipfelpfad Schwarzwald, we noticed a crushed penny machine. In Germany, however, it was a crushed 5 cent machine. This is one of the best souvenirs you get can on a trip, in my opinion.

They don’t cost too much money and they are easy to transport! We love getting them. We also love bears, so it was nice to see one waiting for us as we got off the slide! 🙂
Fun on the Walking Path in the Schwarzwald
When we left the Baumwipfelpfad, we took a dirt path back down the hill to where we started the path and then to the parking lot. Along the way, we found a really cool wood fort to play in and other fun out-of-the-blue objects that gave us a reason to stay a bit longer in the Black Forest.
We really could have planned our entire vacation there, but that will have to be a thought for the future, since we didn’t have more time on that trip!
